How Sunglasses Became Popular

Before the Aviator sunglasses hit the market, there were sunglasses of a different sort. In fact, the history of sunglasses can be dated back to ancient Roman times when Rome emperor Gino used emerald jewels placed over his eyes to watch the gladiator fights. Or, you can date them back to the 12 century when the ancient Chinese culture used smoky quartz over their eyes.  They used them on judges who would have to hide their eyes during courts. Yet, when did sunglasses grow in popularity?

The Use of Sunglasses

Sunglasses became more commonly used during the early 1900's.  During this time, silent movies where on the screens and this attracted a large number of people to the big screen for the first time.  In the United States, which sorely lacked a royal party to follow around, many stars become the "American Royalty."  In turn, many actors and actresses turned to darkened eyeglasses as a way of hiding who they were.   An interesting fact here is that these sunglasses were actually being used to protect the eyes of the actors, who had red, swollen eyes because of the heavy, strong lights used in the making of such films.

Perhaps it is best to take a look at what sunglasses have offered to see why they have been used so readily by today's modern people.

  • The sunglass itself has been attributed to being the way to be cool: helped in part by the use by celebrities.
  • Sunglasses give you anonymity: people really are not sure it is you if they cannot see your eyes
  • Sunglasses now offer UV protection, which helps to keep your eyes healthy and not overexposed to the sun's harmful rays.

Perhaps one of the most important reasons that sunglasses have gained so much popularity has been because of the cost.  Traditionally, sunglasses have been inexpensive. Even with the new popular trends such as the Aviator sunglasses and designer models, there are discounts available. Replica sunglasses and discount designer sunglasses have helped to allow everyone to use them. In fact, the lower cost of sunglasses has helped people "be cool" for less.

In many ways, sunglasses are a popular trend due to the heavy marketing of them. Yet, by far most people use them because they aid eyesight. The winter's bright snow and the summer's glaring sun have all helped to make sunglasses a necessity. Why are they so popular? Sunglasses are popular because they are needed and valuable to users.
