How Sunglasses Are Made
There's a lot that goes into the creation of a product. Before it even hits the factory, someone has to design it in the first place. Sunglasses are no different. Well, there are certain steps to the design process that are integral in creating a great product.
First, you need to think about the design. There are people out there who only work on what the sunglasses will look like. Designer sunglasses, such as Gucci and Chanel, use the best designers in the world. They usually use computer software to help them figure out their design. This process can take weeks or months before the design is happy with the look of the glasses.
Next, a prototype is made of the glasses. This is in use to see if they truly look as good as they should. They tend not to be made of the end material in this step. Instead, it's made with cheaper material and only used for example purposes. If everyone approves of the prototype design, then it can go for manufacturing.
Since the sunglasses have such a particular design, the sunglass manufacturing machines need calibrated in a special way. This way, they will cut materials to fit the design. Once they have calibration, they can start running the machines.
The actual production process varies widely depending on the company. Some sunglass companies create all of their designs by hand. That means no machines. This method is growing exceedingly rare, though. Most companies use both humans and machines instead. The worker will guide the machine and use different tools to mold the sunglasses into their final shape.
Then, there are mass production companies that use machines in their entire process. They only use human workers to inspect the product once it is complete. Prices vary a lot depending on the manufacturing process. All-machine companies tend to be much cheaper than those that make the glasses by hand. You may want to keep this in mind.
The final stage is packaging and shipment. A separate company than who made the sunglasses often does this. They add price tags and labels to the glasses, and put them in boxes. These boxes will then receive transport to various retailers that will then sell the glasses to you.
